Our Story

Drawing on her background in public health and expertise in adult learning theory, founder Kimberly McNeil started Gold Mind Instructional Services (now known as Root Causes Consulting) to go beyond check-the-box training and drive real understanding, growth and change. She believes there is an art to cultivating a physical or virtual atmosphere where participants are comfortable enough to give of themselves to receive information and appreciate the experiences and knowledge of others.

Our logo centers a Sankofa which is an Andinkra (Ghanaian symbols) bird of proverbial lore. The Sankofa adage is translated as ‘go back and get it’. In the very design of the Sankofa, with its head turned backward, it is the only bird that can fly forward and look in reverse at the same time. Therefore, it can “go back and get” the lessons from the past while still progressing onward.

Root Causes Consulting views its interactions and educational opportunities in the same way. Participants explore and self-reflect on their roots and share what they have learned about themselves, others, history, and processes. They can implant and implement the seeds of what they have learned into their present. This application results in the sprouting of leaves that inform perceptive interactions in the future.

Community Engagement

At Root Causes Consulting, a key principle of our mission is collaborating with organizations to strengthen relationships and uncover sustainable solutions that promote equitable access. We strive to plant seeds today for more just, equitable, and compassionate communities tomorrow.

We are proud to support three nonprofit organizations—Boomerang Youth, Inc., H.E.A.R.T.S., and Myra’s Angels Foundation—that focus on addressing the “conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age,” which significantly impact health, functioning, and quality of life for young people. Each of these organizations plays a vital role in meeting the social, emotional, and psychological needs of youth, particularly those from historically excluded and isolated communities who face disproportionate barriers to quality resources.

Boomerang creates brave spaces for Orange County youth to build resilience, establish community connections, and dream their boldest dreams! We inspire youth to bounce back from life’s challenges and move toward positive change. Serving middle and high school students across Orange County, Boomerang offers programs that support social-emotional learning, academic success, and community resilience.

Our core programs include:

‍Strive: An alternative to suspension program helping students stay on track during periods of short-term suspension from school
‍RISE: An in-school, cohort-based social-emotional learning program designed to foster self-awareness, healthy relationships, and community building.

Together, we are working to reduce disciplinary disparities and empower young people to achieve their potential.

Myra's Angels Foundation is a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting foster and homeless children in our community. During their time of transition, we provide immediate essential items such as full-sized toiletries, pajamas, undergarments, socks, stuffed animals, blankets, pillowcases, journals, coloring books, toys, comfort items, school supplies, and more through our Angel Care Bags. Our mission is to alleviate their stress and the psychological trauma they encounter, offering hope, love, and support to the foster and homeless children in need. We strive to make a positive impact on their lives and help them build a brighter future.

Helping Each Adolescent Reach Their Spark, affectionately known as H.E.A.R.T.S. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that educates and equips all adolescent parents, ages 13 to 22, with the tools needed to become independent and self-sufficient. H.E.A.R.T.S. exists to cultivate the development and success of adolescent parents, helping them transition from poverty to sustainability.
